Abstract

The poetic work of Grigol Bagrationi (1789-1830) (one of the representatives of Georgian emigrant literature at the turn of the 18th-19th c.) is interesting primarily in terms of understanding the national problem. He was the son of Ioane (the son of the last king of Kartli-Kakheti - George XII), a famous writer and encyclopedist. Due to his active participation in the 1812 uprising against the Russian colonial regime, G. Bagrationi was deported to Russia to serve his sentence. From that time on, he spent his entire life in exile. His poetic creativity is accompanied by a nostalgia for forced separation from his homeland. Grigol Bagrationi mainly focused on the national problem. Apart from his lyrical poems, he also wrote epic works in regard to the above-mentioned theme. In this respect, his “Kartlis Tskhovreba” (written in a poetic form) is especially interesting. Those phraseological syntagmas and elements of tropes are of interest that are widely used in the poetic texts by Grigol Bagrationi, which actually provide a certain basis for emphasizing the affinity between the poetic legacy of Gr. Bagrationi and that of the Georgian Romanticists. His poetry is also diverse in terms of versification. The author employs the metric patterns that are widely established in the works of his predecessors as well as his contemporary Georgian poets.
